On November 17, 2021 the Office of Communication of the CDC, National Center for Health Statistics announced in a press release that there were an estimated 100,000+ drug overdose deaths in the United States for the first time, based on provisional data. This data was collected during a 12-month period ending in April 2021 and was an increase of 28.5% from the same period the previous year. The data estimates increased overdose deaths from opioids, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, psychostimulants and cocaine.
